Using the Amex Platinum dining credit in Japan
In Japan the Global Dining Credit applies only to prepaid reservations made through Pocket Concierge, American Express's own booking service. A meal booked any other way — by phone, through another site, or paid for at the table — does not count, even at a restaurant Pocket Concierge lists. How to use the credit in Japan
- Save your card's dining credit in the Amex app before you book, not just before you dine: a Pocket Concierge booking is paid for when you make it, and that payment is what the credit is applied to. On a UK Platinum Card, that is the Abroad Dining Credit.
- Find the restaurant on Pocket Concierge. Each Japanese restaurant's page here links to its page there.
- Book the table on Pocket Concierge and prepay it with the Platinum Card the credit is saved to. Check the booking's cancellation terms before you pay.
- Dine as booked. Anything you pay the restaurant directly on the night does not count towards the credit.
Which credit it uses
The amount is set by the market that issued your card, not by Japan. On a UK Platinum Card a meal in Japan comes out of the abroad credit: up to £100 in each half of the year. A US-issued Platinum Card is the exception: it has no Global Dining Credit, and its Resy statement credit applies only at qualifying U.S. Resy restaurants.
